Group Lit Review

For our lit review, we have conducted a survey as our source of information we have chosen is people.

  • What factors contriute towards the existence of a wealthy- poor gap in Singapore?
    • 1. Are most of the wealthy-poor gaps in every country increasing or decreasing and what factors are causing it to?
      • Increasing. Rising cost of living & lower wage increase for the blue collared workers.
      • "Developed country - increasing Non-developed country - same as before"
      • "In every country, there is only one rich-poor gap. So we believe, you are trying to say ""Is the rich-poor gap in most countries widening or narrowing? And what factors do you think are causing this widening/narrowing of the rich-poor gap? Also, are you asking your respondents whether they *feel* the gap is widening/narrowing, or are you asking your respondents whether they *know*?"
      • Increasing. Technology and the lack of education. In the US, funding for education is not a real priority. Also, globalization has cause work to be outsourced to the cheapest companies. People are finding it more and more difficult to find jobs. And also, the lower end jobs, their pay have not really increased a lot, while the cost of living keeps going up.
      • In our opinion, they are increasing. This is because the wealthy people are getting greedier and taking more for themselves, leaving the poor with even lesser.
      • "depend on country.
      • factor includes job available, skillset, education etc"
    • 2. Against 100%, how many people do you suppose are determined to close the gap and what determines this number?
      • 60%. Determination to have better quality of life
      • "100% - no, busy for survival, working, etc"
      • "Nobody is determined to close the gap. There may be politicians and activist groups who are working on closing the gap. What determines this number? Probably the more educated a society is, the more aware a society is, the more people who are aware of the gap, and will work towards to closing the gap."
      • 80%.Just a guess.
      • We guess 60% would be willing to help the poor. This is because people are donating generously, especially if they know that their donations is to help the less fortunate.
      • "10%
      • this the job for the leader that decide the direction for that country."
    • 3. Is the government of Singapore doing anything towards closing the rich-poor gap?
      • No,
      • Yes & No - yes by helping the poor thru education, no as poor will just rely on government's giving & benefit.
      • Yes & No - yes by helping the poor thru education, no as poor will just rely on government's giving & benefit.
      • They are trying. Recently, have tried to increase the salaries of the low end jobs.
      • Yes. The government encourages the rich people to donate money. They hold charity events for people to donate as much money as they wish and the money would then go to the poor.
      • yes
    • 4.Are the rich or poor widening the gap in your opinion?
      • Poor
      • Yes & no in the above comments
      • "I think it works both ways. The rich becomes richer, the poor becomes poorer. People become rich because they are educated, they work hard and they are focused, determined and committed to what they do. People become rich because they spend wisely, and invest in their future. Of course, there is always an element of luck. People become poor almost always because they fail to spend wisely, and invest in their future. Of course, there is also an element of luck here."
      • Yes. We are getting more and more rich foreigners to come and stay and even become citizens. These ppl are suppose to be able to help create jobs.
      • I think that the gap is not widening in Singapore. This is because people are willing to donate within their means even if they do not have that much to give. As for the rich, many of them willingly donate what is extra.
      • not sure
    • 5. Who is to be blamed for the increase in the gap? The wealthy, poor, government or a third party? Kindly state a reason.
      • Wealthy. The rich are getting  richer from investment. Money makes money.
      • "Government - 50% blamed - want to develop economy. Wealthy - 30% blamed - want to get richer. Poor - 20% blamed - too lazy & rely on giving"
      • What third party? Aliens? God? Spirits?
      • Rich become more rich maybe through their business, or are high paying jobs. If the regular people just keep getting by with no pay increase while cost of living keeps going up, then obviously will be struggling. "It is possible that the system is problematic. No one is to blame. The government has to step in and shrink this gap."
      • I think the government could be blamed for the gap. This is because of the inflation rate in Singapore. People are trying to save as much money for themselves just in case they lose their jobs or there is a financial crisis.
      • "government and part of the rich"
    • 6. Do you think the wealthy will remain wealthy in the future or will the poor get better off eventually? Reasoning for your answer will be much appreciated.
      • wealthy will remain wealthy, As mentioned above, money makes more money
      • Depend on so many factors, Government & mentality of people
      • "Read the Bill & Melinda Gates Annual Letter 2013. http://annualletter.gatesfoundation.org/?cid=bg_pt_po0_012103/#section=myth-two To answer your question, I think in the very long run, nothing will remain the same, rich countries can become poor, poor countries can become rich. And this applies to individuals too."
      • Unless something is done to the current problem, this problem will still persist in the foreseeable future.
      • I think that the poor may be better off in the future. In order for them to get out of their poverty, they would be determined to work hard to earn the money. The rich, who may be arrogant may squander their money and become poor eventually.
      • "with the help of government, the poor will be better of. the weathly will depend on how they manged their wealth."
    • 7.Why is the wealthy-poor gap existence important to some people?
      • To encourage the poor to upgrade themselves and therefore contribute to the  country's growth.
      • To be fair to all human beings
      • "Becuase people like the word ""FAIR"". They think it is not fair that some people enjoy so much wealth, while others are suffering in poverty. But they forget there is a difference between Justice and Fairness."
      • If gap is too wide, envy sets in. People feel exploited. Leading to social unrest. Which is not good for a country. Then no company want to come and do business because of the instability
      • It makes some wealthy people feel good to be rich.
    • 8. Are most of the poor people considered bankrupt?
      • No. They can still work and contrlbute to the economy
      • I don't think so - in the 1st first, they don't have the extra $ to be bankrupt.
      • I don't think so - in the 1st first, they don't have the extra $ to be bankrupt.
      • "Not necessary. Poor is relatively. I may be richer than my neighbor but poorer, much poorer than Bill Gates. If people can afford to put food on the table, and take care of their health, and still have a little money left, then you would not consider them bankrupt. In fact, I believe some rich people of bankrupt. Bankrupt not from money, but bankrupt in moral values. Just see the recent rich guy insult the whole of Singapore with his comments on SMELLY SINGAPOREAN."
      • No.
      • no..
    • 9. What is bankrupt in your opinion and how does it increase the rich poor gap?
      • Bankrupt means without means of clearing existing debt. Therefore they are considered poorer than poor.  The gap is definitely the widest between the poor & rich.
      • "It is for the well to-do people who overspend, greedy, etc. Change the mentality of people"
      • "I have no idea what you are trying to ask. Bankrupt to me means legally bankrupt, and it means i fail to honor my debts. Why would it increase the rich-poor gap????"
      • "Bankrupt is when you have no more assets. Rich people can be declared bankrupt but if they may be smart enough to hide their money some where else not in their native country. So, they may not be necessary poor when they are declared bankrupt. No sure how this would increase the rich poor gap then."
      • Bankrupt is when a person has no money or property. When a person is bankrupt, he becomes very poor and the rich who gets his money will get even richer.
